The venue will be available to the public for 12 uninterrupted hours from Monday 27
The actress and stage creator Raquel Garod, with her theatrical show on the transformation of spaces, will be in charge of opening the event organized by the Murcia City Council for the official inauguration of the rehabilitation of the Old Jail in its first phase. It will be this Thursday night, the eve of San Juan, starting at 9:00 p.m.
Later, those invited to the event will attend the opening of the exhibition ‘Ethereal Walls’, which shows, through videos and graphic material, the process of restoring the building that was used for the administrative work of the old provincial prison .
The prepared program includes performances by Vera Lu and Hoonie, who will liven up the evening with their music in different areas of the venue; and the event will be closed by Laura Sanz, who will perform a literary ‘performance’. The opening to the general public will take place from Monday, June 27, from Monday to Saturday from 10 in the morning until 10 at night, without interruption.
“Today begins a stage of harmony, coexistence, and freedom within the walls” of a prison in which “silence and harsh memories of repression and Francoism prevailed,” said the mayor of Murcia, José Antonio Serrano , when presenting this Thursday morning the events and the social and cultural destiny of this emblematic space.
The Councilor for Culture, Tourism and Sports, Pedro García Rex, added that it will be “the first space focused on contemporary culture, to make innovative projects visible and with special support for young Murcian artists, focusing on emerging talent.” The mayor summoned the Murcians “to enjoy” the recovered space because “the prison is already yours and all the citizens of the Region.”
A cultural reference and defense of heritage
The intention of the Murcia City Council is for this center to become both a cultural and heritage defense reference, establishing relations with others with the same characteristics in Madrid, Malaga and Barcelona. The Councilor for European Programs, Juan Fernando Hernández, finally, recalled that “Europe responds when there are well-planned strategies”, referring to the financing of the Feder funds, which has contributed almost 50% of the cost of the works of this first phase .
Murcia now hopes to receive help from the Next Generation for the recovery of the second phase, which, if everything goes as planned, could start running at the end of the year, said the mayor. “The technical project is drafted,” he added.
