Hong Kong’s Ocean Park announced the death of Anne Anne, the world’s oldest giant panda in human care, on Thursday at the age of 35, the equivalent of 105 years of a human’s life.
The park, in which Ann has been living since 1999, added that signs of a continuous deterioration appeared in his health over the past few weeks, with the amount of food he was eating declining until he completely abstained from eating.
An An and Jia Jia, the world’s oldest female giant panda who died in 2016 at the age of 38, were gifts from the Chinese government.
“It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of Ann Ann,” Ocean Park said in a statement.
The zoo added that it was grateful for the opportunity to care for Jia Jia and An An, as it helped her become an important conservation base for the pandas.
“Anne-Ann is an indispensable member of our family who has grown up alongside the park. He has also developed a strong friendship with locals and tourists alike,” she said.
The zoo now has two giant pandas, Yingying and Li Li. The park also displays walruses, penguins and dolphins.
China gave Hong Kong female Ying Ying and male Li Li in 2007. The zoo had hoped the couple would have young, but they have not had children yet.
