Castillo’s removal was approved by 101 votes out of 130.

Vice President Dina Boluarte is expected to be sworn in as the new head of state.

The United States on Wednesday rejected the attempt by the president of Peru, Pedro Castillo, to dissolve Congress and called on the Peruvian population to “remain calm” in the face of the uncertainty unleashed in the country.

“The United States categorically rejects any extra-constitutional act by President Castillo to prevent Congress from fulfilling its mandate,” the US Embassy in Lima said in a statement.

The Joe Biden government “strongly urged President Castillo to reverse his attempt to shut down Congress and allow Peru’s democratic institutions to function according to the Constitution.”

“We encourage the Peruvian public to remain calm during this uncertain time,” the note concluded.

The Congress of Peru dismissed Castillo this Wednesday for “permanent moral incapacity” with 101 of 130 votes in favor, after he announced the dissolution of the Legislature and declared a government of emergency exception and a curfew.

Castillo’s gesture was dismissed as a coup by members of his own government, including Vice President Dina Boluarte, who is expected to be sworn in as the new head of state in the next few hours.

The Joint Command of the Armed Forces (CCFFAA) and the Peruvian National Police (PNP) warned this Wednesday that they would not abide by any act contrary to the constitutional order.
