According to the UN Committee on the Rights of the Child, France violated the rights of French children by leaving them for years in life-threatening and inhumane conditions and in Syrian camps for relatives of suspected jihadists.
“France has the responsibility and the power to protect children of French nationality in Syrian camps against imminent risk to their lives, taking measures to repatriate them,” the international body’s committee said.
The committee, made up of 18 independent experts, stressed in a statement that “prolonged detention of child victims in life-threatening conditions also amounts to inhumane degrading treatment or punishment.”
The group, whose task is to monitor the implementation of the Convention on the Rights of the Child, issued its verdict after studying three cases involving 49 French children detained in Kurdish-controlled camps in northeastern Syria. One of the most significant camps is Al-Hol, with around 56,000 displaced people and refugees.
“Children live in inhumane sanitary conditions, lack basic needs such as water, food, medical attention, and face an imminent risk of death,” said Ann Skelton, a member of the committee.
The official also highlighted that at least 62 children have died in these camps since the beginning of 2021. “The situation is therefore extremely urgent,” she said.
Committee urges France to repatriate minors
In particular, the complaints were filed by a group of Gallic citizens on behalf of their grandchildren, nieces and nephews, some as young as five years old. Some were born in Syria, while others were brought there. According to the authorities, her parents collaborated with the Islamic State.
Of the cases exposed in 2019, 11 children have already been repatriated. The remaining 38 are still detained in “closed camps in a war zone” according to the expert committee. France “has failed to show that it gave due consideration to the best interests of child victims when assessing family members’ repatriation requests,” they argued.
Those in charge of the issue urged Paris to take urgent measures to repatriate the remaining 38 minors, while calling for additional measures to mitigate the risks faced by children remaining in northeastern Syria.
