State Duma deputies took the initiative to invalidate Article 253 of the Labor Code, which serves as the basis for the adoption of a list of professions prohibited for women. Such a bill was introduced on December 6 by deputies from the New People faction. The State Duma can consider it no earlier than February, Yaroslav Nilov, chairman of the committee on labor, social policy and veterans’ affairs, told Izvestia.
According to the order of the Ministry of Labor of Russia, 100 positions are included in the list of industries where the work of women is limited.
The author of the bill, deputy Sardana Avksentyeva, believes that the list of professions prohibited for women is a relic of the past.
“Initially, it was intended to protect women’s health from harmful production. But now the industry is developing very actively, processes are being optimized and automated. And the ban on work for women remains. And it affects entire areas: petrochemistry, metallurgical and mining industries. It’s not fair. In these areas there is a highly paid and not hazardous to health work, ”she explained to Izvestia.
As another author of the bill, deputy Roza Chemeris, noted, the bill is not about feminists and not about gender characteristics, but about the country now and about the people living in it who feel discrimination, oppression, inequality and injustice almost every day.
“We, women, have been hard at work on all possible jobs with our glass ceiling for a long time, along with men. That at the same time, as usual, we get a lower salary. And, criticizing the list of women’s professions from the Ministry of Labor that has lost its relevance, even with the changes made there three years ago, we are not talking about how important it is for a woman to work as a firefighter or a shoemaker. And about how inertia of views interferes with us and development, relevance and dynamics are important, ”she emphasized.
Aleksey Nechaev, leader of the New People faction, supported the initiative. The authors of the draft law stressed that they are determined to negotiate with everyone who is ready for a constructive dialogue.
