The latest update of the The Sims 4 is causing some debate as all paid mods have been banned. The new wording now indicates that mods created for Patreon subscribers or behind paywalls are also illegal.
“All users must be able to access the mods completely free of charge regardless of whether they donate“states the update.”Mods must be non-commercial and distributed free of charge. Mods may not be sold, licensed or rented for a fee, nor may they contain features that would support monetary transactions at any time“.
The term “rented” has confused the community as it is unclear whether early distribution of mods on Patreon prior to a full release would rank under this category, but so far Maxis hasn’t made any comment on that.
For now, Patreon modders aren’t clear how to proceed, but mods can still make money through advertising and donations. However, “passive advertisements and donation requests must be limited to the mod’s website or distribution site and not appear within the mod itself,” it reads.
