Director of the Scientific and Clinical Center for Precision and Regenerative Medicine of the Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University Albert Rizvanov in an interview with TASS assessed the risk of severe omicron in those vaccinated against COVID-19, stating that vaccination significantly reduced the risk.
In this regard, the risks of infection with omicron have become approximately the same as for seasonal influenza. “Omicron has essentially moved into the format of colds, but this only applies to those who have been vaccinated and revaccinated,” Rizvanov said, adding that for the unvaccinated, the risks are still high.
Despite this, the expert clarified that there is still a risk of re-infection due to the spread of two strains of the virus in Russia at once. He emphasized that immunity to delta is less effective against omicron and vice versa.
Earlier, immunologist Nikolai Kryuchkov allowed a new surge in the incidence of COVID-19 in Russia, even though there is currently a decline in the incidence.
