Gastronomy lovers are in luck. Especially those who enjoy tasting the best dishes of the regional territory. The twelfth edition of the Region of Murcia Gastronómica started this Friday under the motto ‘Tradition and Avant-garde’, a concept that brings together in just three letters what it means – and what you know – the culinary congress of LA VERDAD: the union of the product of all life with all its essence and its flavor prepared with the most modern techniques by the best chefs on the national scene.
It was 20 minutes past twelve noon when the Region’s gastronomic treasure chest opened its doors. The starting signal came with the entrance to the venue at 12:20 by the president of the Region of Murcia, Fernando López Miras, the Minister of Culture, Tourism, Youth and Sports, Carmen Conesa, the mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, the director of Murcia Gastronomic Region, Sergio Gallego, the director of LA VERDAD, Alberto Aguirre, his namesake at the Community Tourism Institute, Juan Francisco Martínez and the mayor of Molina de Segura, José Ángel Alfonso.
The head of the regional Executive, the mayor of the capital and the director of the LA VERDAD culinary congress made a brief assessment just before walking along the Calle de las Tapas and seeing all the stands of the event.
Fernando López Miras described Murcia Gastronomic Region as “one of the reference events each year in the Community.” The leader of the autonomous Executive thanked “THE TRUTH for his commitment, which is the same as betting on the Region.” Miras assured that “the gastronomy of our territory is a tourist reference and Murcia Gastronomic Region an event that transcends beyond our borders. Betting on gastronomy is a safe bet, since it contributed no more and no less than 700 million euros to the Community’s coffers. “We will continue to support initiatives as good as this one that LA VERDAD has been carrying out for 12 years.”
The mayor of Murcia, José Ballesta, went further and valued the LA VERDAD culinary congress as “the most important gastronomic event on the entire Mediterranean coast. It is growing year by year. The motto (‘Tradition and Avant-garde’) summarizes its essence very well and is perfectly represented. All the flavors of every corner of the Region are immersed here. Murcia Gastronomic Region is among the three most important culinary events in Spain.
The director of the LA VERDAD culinary congress, Sergio Gallego, stated that in the twelfth edition of the Region of Murcia Gastronómica “we maintain the essence and flavor of always.” He also commented on what the thousands of attendees who pass through the annex pavilion of the Víctor Villegas Auditorium will find: «The presentations will be in pairs to unite tradition and avant-garde. We are going to merge signature cuisine with traditional cuisine. They will all have a tasting. In addition, we have expanded Calle de las Tapas with more restaurant and winery stands, and there will be more meters of terrace.
After the statements, everyone headed down Calle de las Tapas, but not before passing by the Makro stand and observing some of the products from the Region of Murcia, such as rice from Calasparra or vegetables from the Murcia garden.
From Yecla to Murcia
One of the first stops was the stand of the Los Chispos de Yecla restaurant, where the president of the Community enjoyed a plate of gazpachos, whose flavor he summed up in a few words: “It’s delicious.” After that came one of the obligatory stops to observe the ‘liquid gold’ of Murcia: the Estrella de Levante stand. There, all the political representatives enjoyed a beer to refresh their throats and continue getting to know all the positions.
The mayor of Cartagena, Noelia Arroyo, was also present at the inauguration of the Murcia Gastronomic Region 2023, although she arrived after a few minutes. In addition, the councilor of the Popular Municipal Group of Murcia Mercedes Bernabé was also present.
Until next Monday, numerous chefs of recognized prestige in the country will pass through the annex pavilion of the Víctor Villegas Auditorium in the capital, many of them with a Michelin Star and others, for the moment, in search of it. Attendees will be able to enjoy – before or after walking along Calle de las Tapas – varied presentations and workshops where they can delve even further into the gastronomic corners that the Region of Murcia hides, some of its most native products and many of its hospitality establishments. . The time has come to sink your teeth into the Murcia Gastronomic Region.
