The price of the new GR Yaris is insane.
While we are just proclaiming how cheap cars are becoming (the Seat Ateca has been heavily discounted), Toyota comes up with a message. You can order the new GR Yaris. We are of course very happy with that, because it is the best B-segmenter of the moment and perhaps even of all time.
The car has recently been slightly modified. The engine now has more power (280 hp) and more torque (390 Nm). Toyota also improved the cockpit, an automatic transmission is now available and the Torsen diff is standard. In short, that all sounds like good news, provided the price is reasonable.
Price new GR Yaris
And is that so? Well no! The Toyota GR Yaris has become impossibly expensive in our cold little country. The starting price has been announced and we had to scare, tremble and coo at the same time, because Toyota is asking 81,795 euros for it. 81,795 euros!!!
The cheapest way to drive a GR Yaris is to choose a 'Performance' with a manual gearbox. So it's gone 81,795 euros. If you go for the Premium version, you will spend 85,795 euros. A Premium then has as additional equipment forged BBS wheels, JBL installation, some driving safety systems and heating for the buttocks (seat) and hand (steering wheel).
But now things are really getting intense with the price. Do you want an automatic? It is more expensive: 94,295 euros for the Performance and 98,295 euros for the premium. The only options are metallic paint (795 euros) or mother-of-pearl paint (1,050 euros). If you choose the latter on your new GR Yaris premium with automatic transmission, then you should 99,345 euros to transfer. That's almost a ton for a Yaris! That is simply insane.
How does the high price of the new GR Yaris come about?
We dived for a while the pricelist to find out exactly how that happens. The answer is obvious, because it depends on the Dutch government. Toyota itself asks 39,221.49 euros to 44,690.91 euros for the Yaris. VAT is then charged between EUR 8,236.51 and EUR 9,385.09. In the Netherlands we have a rover that is greedy, as evidenced by the BPM amounts. A BPM fine of 33,419 euros applies to the manual transmission and even 43,301 euros to the automatic. Indeed, of the 100 grand that you have to transfer, most of the money goes to the mother country.
How does it happen? Well, you pay extra tax on every gram of CO2. The GR Yaris is a car with only a petrol engine and a transmission that is tuned for acceleration. This means that the car is fairly polluting during the WLTP cycle at part load: the manual transmission emits 197 grams of CO2 and the automatic even 215 grams. So many cars now do that, but they CAN drive a lot more economically in the WLTP cycle thanks to electrical assistance systems. So actually the government is punishing the GR Yaris because it is too honest.
Alternatives?
Then the competition from the new GR Yaris. Of course there isn't one. If you go for a GR Yaris Premium with automatic transmission, you can also go to Toyota for the GR Supra Legend Premium, which costs 100,395 euros. Or how about the Supra four-cylinder, which is available from 72,995 euros. The Audi S3 is larger, more luxurious, more premium and has more power and can be had from 79,333 euros. The BMW M135i xDrive is almost a bargain with a starting price of 71,545 euros. In short, the new GR Yaris is very expensive. Especially when you consider that the previous GR Yaris was available from 50,495 euros.
