The traditional award Ball of Goldwhich annually delivers the magazine French Football to the best male and female soccer player in the world, will no longer coincide with the calendar year, will be aligned with the European season and will change its allocation criteria, rewarding individual merit over the collective.
The most relevant adjustment of all is that from the next edition (2022), the evaluation period will no longer be annual, but seasonal: What happens from August to July will be considered, and not from January to December as it has been until now. The Qatar World Cup will count towards the 2023 award.
The voting system will be more demanding: From 170 juries we will have 100 voters, who will be the representatives of the top 100 countries according to the FIFA ranking. In the case of women, only the representatives of the 50 countries best positioned by FIFA will vote.
There will be clearer criteria: the votes should focus on the individual performance of the players. Then the collective performance and the titles throughout the season will have to be taken into account, nothing of the historical performance of the player.
In this way, we can almost certainly rule out Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, the greatest historical winners, for the 2021/22 edition. The top candidates are Karim Benzema, Robert Lewandowski and Mohamed Salah.
