Power injection, optimized supercharging, advanced S tronic transmission, new dynamic plus driving program, more direct steering and larger brakes. Isn't that enough for you? Also a new high-performance titanium exhaust system. This is the restyling of the Audi S3, a car with which the house with the four rings overlooks a sporty driving dimension, dedicated to those who love extreme performance. This is enough: with 333 HP and 420 Nm of torque, it wins the title of the most high-performance S3 ever: acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h takes place in just 4.7 seconds – a tenth less than the previous model – while the maximum speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. But let's go in order.
Optimized supercharging
“The new turbocharger featured on the 4-cylinder 2.0 TFSI is characterized by refined management of the preload of the wastegate actuators, to be able to guarantee a significant overboost effect when maximum performance is required and, at the same time, maintain a constant turbine speed at the loads partial and at constant speed, to the advantage of progressive delivery”, explain the Ingolstadt technicians. “By opting for the dynamic and dynamic plus driving modes – the latter a novelty – the throttle valve guarantees an extraordinarily prompt response to accelerator pressure. “The 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox, which contributes to quicker acceleration from standstill compared to the previous model, benefits from the superior clutch compression force dedicated to odd ratios. Shift times at full load are reduced by 50%, while at partial loads the engine speed is automatically increased when engaging the gears, so as to guarantee superior reactivity”.
Torque splitter derived from Audi Sport
As with the Audi RS 3, the S3 also adopts torque splitter technology capable of distributing torque between the rear wheels actively and in a completely variable way, to the advantage of dynamism, directional rigor and a behavior that tends to oversteer. Unlike a classic self-locking rear differential and the integral solution with electro-hydraulic multi-plate clutch at the end of the transmission shaft, the latter being the prerogative of the previous generation of Audi S3, the torque splitter uses two electro-hydraulic multi-plate clutches: one for each rear axle shaft.
Dynamic plus and ESC program
There are 6 driving modes used by the drive select driving dynamics control. The well-known auto, comfort, dynamic, individual and efficiency programs are joined by the new dynamic plus setup, thanks to which as much torque as possible is directed to the rear axle, encouraging marked oversteering behaviour. Dynamic plus mode which also involves an even quicker and more aggressive engine delivery curve. An objective which contributes to the raising of the idle speed of the 2.0 TFSI by 200 rpm which, in doing so, reaches 1,300 rpm. At the same time, the S tronic transmission benefits from a dedicated calibration that anticipates downshifts and helps maintain gears at high revs.
But that is not all. The renewed selective torque management on the individual wheels acts in support of the quattro all-wheel drive: an intelligent software function linked to the operation of the ESC which minimally brakes the wheels inside the trajectory, allowing the thrust to be transferred to the wheels with grip improve. At the same time, the stability control (ESC) of the new Audi S3 integrates the action of the torque splitter: the standard setup is accompanied by the sport configuration, less invasive and automatically active in the dynamic plus driving mode.
Marked camber and more direct steering
As in the previous model, the suspension scheme includes a McPherson type front axle. A solution equipped with new bearings that allow a negative camber that is double compared to the past and close to 1.5 degrees. An update that improves both steering precision and directional rigor and, in combination with the stiffer quadrilaterals, makes the new Audi S3 even more agile.
More powerful brakes and high performance tyres
In addition to the increase in performance, the new Audi S3 features self-ventilating front discs with a larger diameter (357 mm) and thickness (+4 mm). The advantages in terms of power and cooling are accompanied by the adoption of pads with a larger friction surface and new two-piston calipers on the front end. Also new are the 18-inch alloy wheels alongside 19-inch wheels (original equipment for the sport attitude versions).
Two new high performance tires in the 235/35 R19 size also make their debut in the range. Specifically, the tires supplied by the Japanese specialist Falken promise stability, directional rigor and high grip even in demanding use on the track.
The new Audi S3 will be in Italian dealerships next May with prices starting from 55,950 euros for the Sportback variant, and from 57,250 euros for the Sedan.
