Naruto, one of the most popular manga of all time, is about to make the big leap to the big screen. Destin Daniel Cretton, known for co-writing and directing the Marvel Studios film “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings”, has been chosen to write and direct a live-action adaptation of the famous manga on behalf of Lionsgate. Cretton, who will also produce the film through his company, Hisako, in collaboration with Jeyun Munford, will work with Avi Arad, Ari Arad and Emmy Yu of Arad Productions, known for their upcoming film adaptation of the video game “Borderlands”, and Jeremy Latcham, linked to the “Dungeons & Dragons” project.
Naruto, born from the pen of Masashi Kishimoto, has established itself over time as one of the most followed intellectual properties in the world, with over 250 million copies of the collected volumes sold in more than 60 countries and territories. The success of the manga has spawned several animated series, as well as a series of video game adaptations and extensive merchandising. Masashi Kishimoto, commenting on Cretton's choice, expressed great confidence in the director, considering him the perfect choice to bring Naruto to the big screen. Cretton, who previously collaborated with Lionsgate on the film “The Glass Castle”, is currently developing a sequel to “Shang-Chi”. His latest work includes directing several episodes of “American Born Chinese,” the Disney+ adaptation of Gene Luen Yang's graphic novel of the same name, of which he also serves as an executive producer.
