Of the total water transferred, 7.5 hm³ will be used for urban supplies and 8.5 hm³ for irrigation
The Ministry decided this Friday a transfer of 16 cubic hectometres, corresponding to the month of June, below the legal maximum of 20. The Central Commission for Exploitation of the Aqueduct confirmed that, as of June 1, the head of the Tagus remains in level 3 of exceptional hydrological situation. The Commission also communicated its forecast that the system will remain at that level throughout the quarter, as well as the next six months.
The Commission verified that there is a volume of transferred water available in the Segura basin for supplies and irrigation of 19.71 cubic hectometres, as well as an authorized volume pending transfer for these uses of 112 hectometres. In application “of the principles of prevention and precaution that must govern the action of public administrations”, the Ministry decided to reduce the discharge to 16 cubic hectometres: 7.5 will be used for urban supplies and the rest for irrigation.
The Commission explained that this decision also responds to the “reduced estimate of contributions for the coming summer months” and “the estimated supply and irrigation consumption for the coming months.” The previous month, the Ministry decided to send the full complement of 20 hectometers.
