There The Last of Us TV series it's based on the video game, but doesn't worry about being faithful to the millimeter. In several situations there are differences, both in how certain characters are presented and in details such as certain dialogues. Now, let's find out that one of the Joel's best jokes of the TV series – which is not present in the game – was created directly by Pedro Pascal, or the protagonist actor.
Obviously in order to explain exactly what the joke is we will have to not only tell you the words, but also give you some context: if you haven't seen the series and don't want any kind of preview, don't continue beyond the image you find below as you might consider what we are about to write as a spoilers.
Joel's joke created by Pedro Pascal (spoiler)
In the sixth episode, Joel and Ellie they finally arrive in Jackson, the town where Tommy lives. There, Joel tries to leave Ellie and asks Tommy – his brother – to take care of the rest of the journey to the Lights, the organization that wants to create a vaccine using Ellie's immunity.
There, Joel is shown to be much weaker and tired than he appears in the game and admits to having problems nightmares every night. When Tommy asks him what he dreams of, Joel replies:
“I can't remember. I just know that when I wake up, I've lost something. I'm even failing at sleep.” Obviously everything is linked to mourning his daughter, Sarah, and the fact that Ellie reminds him of her and Joel is afraid of losing her. This line gives a new depth to Joel and the credit goes directly to Pascal.
“It was obviously a difficult monologue to write, but the [battute]: 'I have dreams… All I know is that when I wake up, I know I've lost something,'” Mazin says, “it's something that comes directly from Pedro“.
“The idea that when you wake up you feel like you've lost something is so beautiful and confessional“, continues Mazin. “This is not something similar to what we saw from Joel in the game. It's different. It's sadder, I think. It's deeper and it's a little more upsetting.”
The first season of The Last of Us is of the highest quality and it is no coincidence that it won the Best New Series award at the WGAA 2024.
