It has just been 49 years since the death of the dictator Francisco Franco and in two weeks the promulgation of the 1978 Constitution will be commemorated. Today’s Spain is much better than that of those years in economic and social development, as well as in political system, although it has important challenges and problems. But perhaps what would most surprise the anti-Franco supporters of that time is the absolute impunity with which in 2024 fascism is advocated.
It was shameful and regrettable to see the spectacle of fascists walking through the streets of Madrid on November 22, in a demonstration that ended in front of the PSOE headquarters with madmen singing Face to the Sun with flares. And it is not the first time this has happened: for a year now, fascist symbols and chants have been common in its surroundings. Swastikas, Franco’s shields and San Andrés crosses filled with prayers, insults to Pedro Sánchez and songs like Cara al Sol and the anthem of José María Pemán.
