An employee of the incinerator in the town of Yuncos, Spain, realized that he was having to collect too many dead dogs in the garbage bags that he had to take every fortnight. He decided to alert the authorities, but he did not know that the investigation would lead to the door of Luis Miguel VF, who had an animal blood bank without ever having been certified as a veterinarian.
The Prosecutor’s Office and Seprona, the investigative body for the protection of the environment and animals in Spain, indicate that it would be a case of massive cruelty against more than 500 dogs over a period of 16 years. This is because the man founded his company as a veterinary blood bank in 2006.
Unlike human blood banks, which exist as public institutions, international foundations and even many hospitals have their own blood donor collections, for animals they do not exist. For that reason, the animal blood market is small and completely private.

It was precisely this detail that Luis Miguel VF took advantage of, whose surnames are protected since the investigation is still ongoing, as he became one of the only providers in Spain of blood bags necessary for multiple veterinary interventions.
Research Findings
As reported by the Spanish newspaper ‘El País’, the Veterinary Transfusion Center (as the company was called) managed to accumulate clients nationally and internationally. According to the Civil Guard -the Spanish police force-, there would be evidence of At least 500 animals have died due to the center’s cruel practices.

“It is being investigated if blood was drawn from sick animals and the exact number that died in these circumstances”, declared a member of the Civil Guard to ‘El País’. So far they have managed to verify that, between April and May, they drained until they killed 60 animals, specifically dogs and cats.

Many of the animals that arrived at the Humanes farm, the place where the transfusion center operated, were delivered by their owners. In particular greyhound dogs that had been bought for the hunting season and then had no use for them.

According to the official website of the Veterinary Transfusion Center, which went down after the start of the investigation into the case, hemoglobin packages for dogs, cats, rabbits and horses were offered on request.

The cruelty of the case was evidenced in the cause of death of the animals that they were able to collect as part of the investigation. They died due to hypovolemic shock, that is, because they lost an excessive amount of blood. Usually, blood is drawn in small amounts through the jugular or the legs, but in this case they sent a hose directly to the heart of the animals and drained the blood completely while they were still alive.
Cristina Fragio, head of the Veterinary Clinical Hospital of the Complutense University, told ‘El País’ that “As there are generally few donors, we always use this type of bank. I myself have used blood from this company and never detected anything unusual.”

The authorities managed to rescue 275 animals when they arrested Luis Miguel VF, some of which did not manage to survive the siege of this ‘vampire’. Others are in the process of recovery right now.
