Bernal, Siso, Ortuño, Carmelo, Candela, Fernando and Sornichero are the seven survivors of that Real Murcia youth squad that in 1957 won the final of the Copa del Generalísimo, current Copa del Rey, by beating Txorri Erry de Erandio in Barcelona by 6 -1. This septet has recently met in Murcia to celebrate the 65th birthday of such a feat, to continue strengthening the bonds of friendship and to remember those who have been left behind, the president Juan José Rojo, the coaches Villalaín and Marianín and various companions, such as Captain Oliva, Navarro, Gracia, Gomariz, Pepito and Pascual. They gave Real Murcia the only national title achieved throughout its hundred years of history, specifically the Copa del Generalísimo, current Copa del Rey, for youth soccer, in 1957.
«Real Murcia youth goes through fields and stadiums that we became champions by beating Txorri Erry. We come from Barcelona with the only illusion of offering the Patron the champion’s cup ». This was the coplilla that resounded over and over again in the bus that transported these young Murcian soccer players back home, after winning the final in the now-defunct Barcelona field of Sarriá against Txorri Erry de Erandio (6-1). It was June 16, 1957 and the reception was tremendous.
A gift watch
The president of that youthful Real Murcia team, Juan José Rojo, in March 2003 and in a report published in with the survivors of that feat, recalled that as a prize he gave each one a watch “which was very cheap because I took the opportunity to buy them in a trip I made to Tetuan”, as well as that “they gave them ten duros after each game and I exchanged the money for a bag with the snack. I did it because I didn’t want to addict them so soon…».
This is the only great title achieved by the grana club in its centenary history
It was another football and they were other times. “The coffee with glucose that the players drank at halftime in games was made by my wife at home.” The fact that he was a military pharmacist helped him “put Villalaín, an Aviation commander, in charge of physical preparation. It was a success because we surpassed all the rivals in physical depth », it was one of the details that he explained.
It was an excellent batch of footballers that the grana club had then because that same year, 1957, six of those players who won the Cup with Real Murcia (Candela, Oliva, Bernal, Fernando, Ortuño and Sornichero) were members of the youth team. from Murcia who were proclaimed champions of Spain by defeating the Gipuzkoan team (3-2) at the Santiago Bernabéu. The rest of the squad of that champion Real Murcia was made up of Guzmán, Siso, Carmelo, Navarro, Gracia, Gomariz, Pepito and Céspedes.
the other finals
They led the way and then came other finals. The youthful Real Murcia ran into another Basque team in the 1960 final, CD Firestone from Bilbao, but with different luck. The Basques won by a clear and fair 5-2. The grana accused that day the injuries of Mussener and Juan Francisco. It took fifteen years for the Real Murcia youth team to qualify for another Cup final. The rival was Barcelona and bad luck sided with the Grana on this occasion. The title was decided in a tiebreaker match after the first ended 1-1. Barça took the tiebreaker the next day (2-4).
Murcia and Barcelona repeated the final in Madrid in 1976 and the Catalans won again (1-0). The last Youth Cup final that the Grana club played was in 1982 and they faced Real Madrid, who won 2-0 in Albacete.
