After the terrorist attack in the Crocus City Hall near Moscow, there was a short-term outbreak of anti-migration sentiment, which contradicts the long-term trend towards improving attitudes towards labor immigrants, General Director of VTsIOM Valery Fedorov said in an interview with Izvestia.
“Literally a month and a half ago, fresh data was published on the attitude of Russians towards immigration. This release received a huge amount of feedback, mostly negative. <...> Because these data showed: over the past 13-15 years, the attitude of Russians towards migrants has improved significantly,” Fedorov said.
Among the factors that contributed to the changes, the sociologist named the habituation of Russian citizens to labor migrants, as well as demographic problems.
“This is not a feature of Russia, this is a global trend. Now even in China the demographics have become worse. And in this situation the question arises: where to get labor? In Russia today, the unemployment rate according to the typology of the International Labor Organization is 2.9%. This is very little, and this is not at all good for business,” Fedorov emphasized.
