Paris firefighters have found a dismembered body inside a suitcase at the foot of the Austerlitz bridge in the French capital. At this time, the identity of the victim and the causes of his death are unknown. The macabre discovery occurred around 10:00 p.m. on Saturday after firefighters went to that area to put out a fire that had occurred in a pile of garbage. Once it was extinguished, they found among the ashes the suitcase with the human remains inside.
The body is charred and its arms and legs have been amputated, according to the BFMTV television network, which cites police sources close to the investigation. This latest information has not been, at the moment, officially confirmed by the Police or by the Prosecutor’s Office, which has opened an investigation for voluntary manslaughter. The Judicial Police brigade is in charge of the investigation.
The main suspicions fall on a 34-year-old man, who is detained after appearing at a police station this Sunday claiming to be the murderer. He has not yet been interrogated by the agents, as sources from the Paris Prosecutor’s Office confirmed to this newspaper, but it is not ruled out that the victim was a person with a disability whom he cared for. The authorities hope that the autopsy will clarify the cause of death and the identity of the deceased.
According to the Europe 1 radio network, the alleged murderer, of Vietnamese origin, worked as a home carer. The crime would have occurred three weeks ago during a dispute between the accused and the person in charge of him. Apparently, he then kept the body hidden until this Saturday, when he put the remains in a suitcase and then set them on fire next to the bridge. This information has not yet been officially confirmed.
The bridge, located near Paris’ Austerlitz station, spans the Seine River. Built in 1905, under this viaduct the river parade will begin precisely during the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. Instead of doing so in a stadium, a total of 10,500 Olympic athletes will travel by boat the six kilometers that separate the Austerlitz bridges and Iena. The opening ceremony will end in the Trocadéro area in front of the Eiffel Tower.
