The El Raal facilities will have a new concrete enclosure and the Rincón de Seca facilities will have a new accessible entrance
There are only eight days left for the official arrival of summer and in the fourteen swimming pools of the municipality of Murcia they work against the clock so that everything is ready for its summer opening. “We only have eleven weeks to do the maintenance of the recreational pools. You have to comply with the health regulations, it is not like in the case of the pavilions, because very strict controls have to be carried out that go to the Ministry of Health, since many diseases are transmitted through the water”, explains Beatriz Martínez, the person in charge of leading this task in the Sports Service of the City Council, where he has been working for more than twenty years. «We started the check-up around the month of April to see what corrective measures each facility needs and thus prioritize the actions based on the budget. This year, with the rains and, later, with the arrival of the sudden heat, we have had to run to carry out the masonry work”, highlights this technical architect.
The most frequent fine-tuning works are those that have to do with the vessels and overflows, as well as the revision of the purification system. «Summer pools spend many months without maintenance. The glasses are emptied as soon as the heat begins to prevent stagnant waters from attracting mosquitoes, but we cannot leave them without water all year. When we get to that point, the joints of the tiles are checked and if any of them have to be changed, ”says Martínez. In the case of overflows, the gaps between tiles are renewed every year, because “it is an area that is stepped on more and is cleaned with descaling agents that wear down the floor”.
The Murcia Parque Olympic swimming pool -the only one in the municipality with this name- will be the first to open its doors, on June 21. There, the changing rooms of the monitors have been renovated, where no reforms had been made since it was inaugurated almost 30 years ago.

Improvements in districts
The next ones to host the first baths of the summer will be the swimming pools in the districts of Rincón de Seca, El Raal, La Ñora, Corvera, Aljucer, Sangonera la Verde, Sangonera la Seca and Alquerías on June 25. In these facilities, the work undertaken in Rincón de Seca stands out, where the shade area has been expanded and an accessible and direct entrance has been made from the street, since until now it was necessary to go through the sports center. In the case of El Raal, a concrete enclosure has been built, which will replace the mesh that delimited the enclosure, and the non-slip paint of the overflow has been renewed, because this pool does not yet have pavement that has these characteristics to prevent slips .
The Espinardo pool will be ready to welcome the summer season on July 1, although it is a facility that only works as heated and whose use is intended for the Swimming Federation clubs and the courses that are taught in summer. Mar Menor and Infante are also air-conditioned, opening on the 4th of the same month.
Puente Tocinos and El Palmar will have to wait until July 9 to see their pools open, since they are multipurpose and until June they work as heated. “The one in El Palmar has a metal structure with canvases that can be removed and the one in Puente Tocinos is covered, but it has sliding aluminum doors that open and connect it to the outside solarium area, where the sun loungers are placed,” details the person responsible for Murcians enjoying the swimming pools of the municipality. “We still have a lot of work to do to reach the finish line for another year,” she concludes.
