Guus Hiddink is in talks with the football association of Curaçao to get back to work as technical director of the island. A spokesman for the Federashon di Futbol Korsou (FFK) confirms that negotiations are underway with the 75-year-old Dutchman. According to insiders, there is a good chance that both parties will announce an agreement in the near future.
Hiddink was already national coach and technical director of Curaçao in 2020, succeeding Dutchman Remko Bicentini. He is now assistant national coach of Canada, but then had to pack his things on the Caribbean island due to the arrival of Hiddink. Hiddink was on the bench for only two official international matches with Curaçao. An infection with corona brought an abrupt end to his work.
Patrick Kluivert took over the honors at the time and after last summer Hiddink announced that he would stop permanently. Kluivert is currently not an option as national coach. If Hiddink and Curaçao do indeed come out, the former trainer of, among others, Real Madrid, Chelsea, PSV and Orange should therefore appoint a new coach.
Hiddink, who is chairman of the Association of Professional Football Coaches, already indicated around his 75th birthday that he never really wanted to stop with activities in football. ,,I wouldn’t take a job as national coach anymore”, he said in this newspaper. “I’m still open to some advice here and there or thinking along with you once in a while. Football is always an attraction, so I’m not completely gone yet. Let me sum it up like this: I want to stay involved in football, that’s all. You never stop playing football.”
That turned out to be a reason for the football association of Curaçao to poll him again. Hiddink, who fully recovered from corona, was last active in the qualifying series for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, although the last matches passed him by corona. Now that he is back in top shape, he still wants to mean something for the FFK.
