The amount will be allocated to NGOs to purchase items such as basic food baskets and household appliances for the population of Canoas and Esteio
A Petrobras approved this Monday (May 6, 2024) a donation worth R$ 5.6 million to support victims of the rains in the municipalities of Canoas and Esteio, in Rio Grande do Sul. The state-owned company already operates in the two cities, both in an emergency situation.
The amount will be allocated to BR Union Movementthrough the Children’s Institute, a non-profit organization. The resource will be used to purchase essential items, such as basic food baskets and household appliances, among others, to assist victims.
The 2 municipalities are located in the Metropolitan Region of Porto Alegre. In Canoas, Petrobras operates Refap (Alberto Pasqualini Refinery) and the Canoas Thermoelectric Unit. The municipality of Esteio is located in the area covered by the refinery’s operations.
“This is the biggest natural catastrophe in Rio Grande Sul, with no historical precedent in scope and number of people affected, and Petrobras expresses solidarity with the victims, fulfilling its role as a socially responsible company”said the president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates.
The cash donation adds to other emergency measures that have already been taken by Petrobras, such as the volunteer campaign to donate food, cleaning and hygiene items to affected families. Teams were mobilized to facilitate the purchase and delivery of basic food baskets, water, personal hygiene items, cleaning items, mattresses and blankets.
The gymnasium at the headquarters of the Petrobras Employees Club in Canoas is being used to welcome homeless families. There are currently around 500 sheltered there. In addition, the company provided a vessel and equipment to store medicines.
Donations made to date:
- 510 mattresses;
- 80 blankets;
- 150 basic food baskets; It is
- 150 hygiene kits.
Logistical support offered by Petrobras:
- supply of diesel and gasoline for the Canoas Fire and Civil Defense Department, Jet A (aviation fuel) for the Canoas Air Base and 300 liters of gasoline for the Fire Department of the same municipality;
- supply of water trucks and chemical toilets to support communities in the region;
- teams mobilized to facilitate the purchase and delivery of basic food baskets, water, personal hygiene items, cleaning items, mattresses and blankets;
- Helicopter and speedboat rentals were offered to the Civil Defense of Canoas, but there is still no demand for service.
