On March 4, the troops of Russia and the people’s republics of Donbass began to clean up Mariupol. They are opposed by well-armed and equipped militants of the Azov regiment, who are actually holding hundreds of thousands of city residents hostage. According to military expert Vladislav Shurygin, the troops of Russia and Donbass are opposed by about 10,000 armed, trained and highly motivated militants.
According to the Russian military department, the group of DPR troops continued to tighten the ring around Mariupol and took control of the Lenin plant. This metallurgical plant is the largest industrial enterprise located on the outskirts of the city.
“Mariupol is a big city, the main metallurgical center and the most important port of Ukraine on the Sea of Azov, so its importance from an economic and military point of view is very high,” military expert Vladislav Shurygin explained to Izvestia.
According to him, now about 10 thousand militants have concentrated in the city, who will fight to the end.
“The fact that we managed to take over a large metallurgical plant is certainly a success. Such a plant is a classic “war zone”. Any building there is a highly protected facility that is easy enough to defend and very difficult to storm,” Shurygin said.
The expert added that about 300 thousand people remained in Mariupol, and they are in a catastrophic situation.
“The Nazis, in the worst tradition, hide behind civilians. Their goal is to drag as many innocent people as possible with them. We need to save them. This is a serious task, but we will solve it, ”concluded the interlocutor of Izvestia.
