The President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), said this Monday (May 6, 2024) that it will install an external commission in Casa Alta to discuss ways to help with the reconstruction of Rio Grande do Sul, affected by heavy rains. According to the latest Civil Defense bulletin, 83 people died in the State and more than 800,000 were affected.
According to Pacheco, the panel will be composed of the 3 senators from Rio Grande do Sul in the Senate, in addition to 1 congressman from each party bloc. In total, there will be 8 senators.

The president of the National Congress declared that there is still no definition of the instrument used by the Legislature to assist the State. According to the Inmet (National Institute of Meteorology), weather alerts “great danger” indicate the occurrence of meteorological phenomena of exceptional intensity. In this range, there is the possibility of major damage and accidents and risks to physical integrity or even human life.
Part of the southeast and southwest of the state is under a level of danger due to the storm. Rainfall will be 30 to 60 mm/h (millimeters per hour), with winds of 60 to 100 km/h. There are risks of flooding, electricity cuts, damage to crops and falling trees in the region. The central-western portion is under a potential danger alert, with lower risks of damage and power cuts.
On Thursday (May 2), the federal government recognized a state of public calamity in the state, after governor Eduardo Leite (PSDB) decreed the status.

On Sunday (May 5), he requested the suspension of payment of the monthly installment of the State’s debt, of R$ 3.5 billion, for the period that the reconstruction of the damage caused by the rains lasts. .
