Russia’s aggression against Ukraine continues 109 days after the outbreak of the invasion on February 24. With key cities in the south under control of Moscow and a sustained advance on the Donbass, the Ukrainian government is waiting for a good sign to deepen its entry into the European Union.
In this sense, this Saturday the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, visited kyiv with the mission of discussing accession as an adhering country to the community club of the so far 27. Finally, she assured that next week she will have certainties about the ambition Ukrainian to join the European Union.
On the other hand, Ukraine confirmed that it has suffered 10,000 military casualties since the armed conflict began. For its part, Montenegro sanctioned 34 Russian citizens and is negotiating the evacuation of civilians in Azot.
These are the most important news of the war in Ukraine this Saturday, June 11:
- 10:00 (BOG) EU to rule next week on Ukrainian order, says von der Leyen
The president of the European Commission was in kyiv again this Saturday to speak with Volodímir Zelenski about the ambition of being a candidate country to join the community bloc. Von der Leyen highlighted the Ukrainian “determination” and confirmed that in a week there will be an official decision on the matter.
“Our talks today will allow us to finalize the assessment. The path is known, it is based on merit”, said the EC leader. “I appreciate the enormous efforts and determination of Ukraine. The people showed strength, motivation and energy,” she added.
The German said that “Ukraine was on the right track” because it has “a solid parliamentary democracy with robust institutions”, but said that it should “do more” in the fight against corruption and administrative modernization.
- 09:28 (BOG) Montenegro sanctions 34 Russian citizens
The Balkan country froze 44 properties belonging to 34 people under the punishments imposed by the European Union and allies towards Moscow, according to a statement from the Ministry of the Interior.
In total, approximately 19,000 flats and premises have Russian owners or partners, most of them on the Adriatic coast. The Montenegrin government confirmed that it has aligned itself with the EU’s foreign policy.
- 09:01 (BOG) Pro-Russians negotiate with Ukrainian soldiers to evacuate civilians from Azot
The separatists of the self-proclaimed people’s republic of Lugansk, in favor of the Russian regime, asserted this Saturday that they are in talks with the Ukrainian military entrenched in the Azot chemical plant, in Severodonetsk, to remove the civilians who remained in the facilities.
“We established contact with the fighters. We are negotiating the safe exit of civilians from the territory of the factory”, said Rodión Miroshnik, who acts as the Russian ‘ambassador’ in Lugansk.
The pro-Russian explained that “between 300 and 400 Ukrainian combatants” are blocked on the property and that they can no longer leave the place because “all escape routes are cut off.” Miroshnik said that the local soldiers want to be let out together with the citizens.
As for the civilians, he estimated that there may be up to 500 people hidden in the shelters, but there may be more in other sectors of the factory.
- 08:37 (BOG) Ukraine reports 10,000 military casualties in war
The presidential adviser, Oleksiy Arestovych, reported through a message broadcast on YouTube that tens of thousands of soldiers lost their lives as a result of clashes with Russian troops.
This is the first official number of fallen militias provided by kyiv since the start of the war. However, Arestovych himself said that it was “approximate”. Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov had long said that an average of 100 soldiers were killed in combat every day.
While the Ukrainian General Staff estimates that Russia has suffered 32,000 casualties since February 24.
- 08:03 (BOG) Von der Leyen returns to kyiv to discuss the application to the European Union
The president of the European Commission said that she traveled to Ukraine to meet with the head of state, Volodimir Zelensky, in the days prior to the publication of the community club’s assessment of kyiv’s application to be a candidate country to enter the European Union.
“It’s good to be back in kyiv,” von der Leyen wrote on his Twitter account. “With President Zelensky we will talk about the joint work necessary for reconstruction and the progress they have made on their European path,” he added.
The European Commission announced that this month it will make official its evaluation report regarding the Ukrainian desire to advance in its entry into the European Union, something that may take years, but this time it was reduced to months.
🇺🇦 Good to be back in Kyiv.
With President @ZelenskyyUa I will take stock of the joint work needed for reconstruction and of the progress made by Ukraine on its European path.

Zelenski said that he was waiting for “a logical decision” from the heads of state and government who will meet at a summit on June 23 and 24. The Ukrainian president assured that “it will be a historic session” if they support the country’s request for him.
“This is a defining moment not only for Ukraine, but for the European Union and the entire continent. It is at this time that we are identifying a future for a unified Europe,” she emphasized.
