The EU will impose “firm and proportionate countermeasures” to Trump’s tariffs: “They will not be unanswered”

“They won’t get no response.” The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has reacted to the signing of tariffs to aluminum and 25% steel with a statement in which he reiterates that there will be “firm and proportionate countermeasures” to that decision.

Von der Leyen regrets that Donald Trump has definitely given the passage of taxing those materials and in the EU insists that it is a “counterproductive” decision. “Tariffs are taxes: bad for companies, worse for consumers,” says the president of the European Commission.

“The EU will act to safeguard its economic interests. We will protect our workers, companies and consumers, ”adds the statement. However, the European Commission has not given any detail of what the response to tariffs will be and keeps the details about what type of tariffs will impose to US products.

When in 2018 Washington also tax Levi’s clothes, bourbon whiskey or Harley-Davidson motorcycles.

In the European Commission they do not point to the moment they will make decisions, although many European governments, such as Emmanuel Macron, demand that reprisals be immediate. The Colegio de Commissioners meets this afternoon, although the subsequent press conference to present the “road map” of the multiannual budget is not expected until Wednesday morning.

The president of the European Commission, who has been waiting for Trump for months to give him a hearing, will meet on Tuesday with Vice President JD Vance on the banks of a summit on artificial intelligence that Macron organized in Paris.
