The European Commission is committed to financially punishing 200 more people and entities and prohibiting the export of components necessary for the manufacture of drones
The European Commission is preparing a new battery of measures against Russia after the escalation of violence in recent weeks in Ukraine. Brussels proposes to include in its ninth package of sanctions individual punishments for 200 entities and people – among them members of the Duma and the Russian Federal Council. In addition, it will sanction three new Russian banks and limit Moscow’s access to drones and unmanned aircraft, such as those used by Russian forces to attack Ukrainian cities in recent days.
“We will hit hard the Russian Army, the military and defense sector, arms companies and those who plan missile attacks that target civilians and civilian structures, in a clear violation of International Law,” said the head of diplomacy. European, Josep Borrell. In the same vein, the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has expressed herself, who has assured that the European Union (EU) is willing to “reinforce the pressure” to make “Russia pay for her cruelty”.
The new sanctions package, which will be presented to the ambassadors of the Twenty-seven in the coming days, includes a list of 200 “key” people and entities in Moscow’s “brutal and deliberate” aggression against kyiv. In addition to the targeted attack on energy infrastructure, which has left thousands of homes without heating and water, the EU accuses the Kremlin of carrying out “indiscriminate attacks against civilians”, kidnapping Ukrainian children and stealing agricultural products.

Brussels also proposes sanctions on three additional Russian banks, which they hope will “paralyze Putin’s war machine.” In the arms sector, the bloc has proposed new controls and restrictions on exports, which include certain chemical compounds and electronic components. In addition, the EU will try to limit Russia’s access to all types of drones and unmanned aircraft by banning the export of drone engines to Moscow and third countries such as Iran, “which could supply Russia with these components.”
In the field of propaganda, Brussels proposes to cancel the broadcast of four other channels in community territory. The Commission also encourages the imposition of new energy sanctions, banning Russian investments in the mining sector.
