A new version of the Sputnik V vaccine has been transferred to production, where it will be prepared for clinical trials for efficacy against Delta and Omicron coronavirus strains. This was announced on Wednesday, September 28, by Denis Logunov, deputy director of the center for scientific work, during a lecture at the Openbio forum site.
Delta-Omicron has now been put into production, and clinical trials will start soon,” he said.
Logunov stressed that in total, more than 150 million doses of the Sputnik V vaccine have been produced and used in Russia and in the world at the moment.
Earlier, on August 23, it became known that the National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology named after N.F. Gamalei has developed a new version of the Sputnik V vaccine, effective against the Delta and Omicron coronavirus strains. During the tests conducted by the institute, a significant decrease in the viral load on the lungs was recorded in animals infected with the Omicron strain of the BA5 coronavirus.
It was noted that the development will achieve high results in preventing the incidence of COVID-19.
Before that, on August 21, the director of the N.F. Gamalei Alexander Gintsburg said that the effectiveness of the Russian vaccine “Sputnik V” in the fight against “Omicron”-strain COVID-19 exceeds the corresponding indicators of Western vaccines Pfizer and Moderna.
According to the Director General of the Russian Direct Investment Fund (RDIF) Kirill Dmitriev, the Russian vaccine Sputnik V has become the most exported drug in the history of the country in two years. The expert clarified that the drug has established itself as one of the most effective and safe tools to combat COVID-19.
The vaccination campaign continues in Russia. Russians are vaccinated for free. Seven coronavirus drugs have been registered in the country: the world’s first COVID-19 vaccine Sputnik V, Sputnik Light, Sputnik M, EpiVacCorona, EpiVacCorona-N, CoviVac and Convasel.
