Starting this Monday, driving schools will have mandatory testimony from victims of traffic accidents in the courses for partial and total recovery of points on the driving license.
This is one of the novelties of a ministerial order from the Ministry of the Interior and prepared by the General Directorate of Traffic (DGT), which regulates road awareness and re-education courses for drivers, and which includes some news to modify incorrect behaviors on the road and to raise awareness about the serious consequences of road accidents.
The standard updates another one from 2005 after almost 20 years since implementation of the points permit.
One of the new features is the mandatory participation of victims of traffic accidents in all courses because, according to the DGT, “Its effectiveness in changing attitudes has been demonstrated”. Until now, his testimony was optional.
Furthermore, it increases the time allocated to dynamics group because students internalize the messages better and it allows psychologists to appreciate how they are accepting them.
They are also created new offending profiles: distractions, reckless behavior in motorists, speed, alcohol and other drugs, and reckless and criminal behavior that are assigned to students based on the infractions committed and for which they have lost points for the delivery of the specific part of the course.
For years, distractions have been the first contributing factor in fatal accidents and motorcyclists are one of the groups that have increased their accident rate the most in recent years. Therefore, a new specific area of course content is related to motorcycles.
Likewise, the new technologies in the specific part of the courses, with the possibility that their content can be done online through teletraining or virtual classroom.
Partial recovery
There are two types of courses awareness and road re-education. One of them is partial point recovery, whose minimum duration drops from 12 to 10 hours.
Seven hours focus on the common part, of which four will be dedicated to general training on subjects related to road safety culture (taught by a trainer), one hour of group dynamics (led by psychologist-trainers), another hour for victim testimonies and a final hour of variable content (taught by a trainer).
Furthermore, there are three hours for the specific partwhich will be individualized for the driver according to his deficiencies and taking into account his offending nature. The established profiles are speed, alcohol and other drugs, reckless behavior, criminal behavior, distractions or reckless behavior on a motorcycle.
Passing these courses allows drivers recover four points. They can only be done once every two years at most, a period that is reduced to one in the case of professional drivers.
