Chile is immersed in a spiral of tension from different fronts. Two years after the start of the social outbreak that led to the drafting of a new Constitution, a process that is still under way, social tension is once again strongly felt in the Araucanía region as a result of the conflict between the Chilean State and the Mapuches, who maintain a series of historical claims. The clashes and demonstrations led to the militarization of the area in recent days …
Another crisis front facing the Chilean president are the accusations against him for the irregular sale of the mining company Dominga, which was part of a company owned by his sons. A transaction that was revealed in the ‘Pandora Papers’, the investigation of the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists. The fact has led several sectors of the opposition to formally accuse the president, while the Chilean Prosecutor’s Office opened an investigation for bribery and bribery.
A possible impeachment could lead to the removal or disqualification of Piñera from holding public office. The president has defended himself, arguing that he dissociated himself from the business in 2009 and added that what was revealed in the ‘Pandora Papers’ had already been investigated previously. This would be the second process that Piñera faces after in November 2019 he was accused of human rights violations during the social outbreak.
According to a survey by the consulting firm Activa Research, 67.7% of those surveyed agree in a political trial against the president, while 14.9% recognize themselves as strongly disagreeing with this procedure. All this happens within the framework of an electoral campaign for the presidential elections on November 21.
