Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa passed a litmus test with the partial results of the referendum and popular consultation voted on Sunday, April 21 in Ecuador. Of the 11 questions put to the vote, related to security issues, nine obtained the support of “Yes”, reflecting support for the tough policies against organized crime promoted by the Government. What is coming for Ecuador and the Noboa Administration after these results? We discussed it in El Debate.
This referendum was the second time in less than a year that Ecuadorians went to the polls.
The context is complex: Ecuador is experiencing an uptick in violence that has caused the death of three mayors so far in 2024. Even on the day of the referendum, April 21, the murder of Damián Parrales, director of the prison, was reported. from the coastal province of Manabí.
The referendum results show general support for security measures, although proposals related to international arbitration and labor did not gain support. This suggests that The Government of Daniel Noboa has work ahead of it to gain the trust of voters on these issues.
