The emblematic festival of the Murcian district kicks off its return after the pandemic with a spectacular muse election gala
The Cabezo de Torres Carnival is finally back and, after the pandemic disappointment of last February, there seems to be no turning back. The festival, declared of Regional Tourist Interest, kicked off this Saturday with a colorful and spectacular musa and muso 2023 election gala, held for the first time open to the public in Murcia’s Plaza Circular. The winners were Irene Nicolás, from the comparsa You take me out of my mind; and Pedro Medina, from the group Rebeldes.
The evening began with a lively parade from the Plaza de Santo Domingo, in which 40 people participated, including candidates and members of a batucada group. The applicants already found themselves in the Circular with a dedicated audience, which had previously been ‘warmed up’ by the comedian Marco Antonio and who was subsequently conquered by the singer Diego Martín with his performance. An entertainment area, on both sides of the stage extension catwalk, allowed the members of the different troupes to inspire their already motivated candidates.
This eagerness and enthusiasm, after two blank years, was seen both in the first pass, in which the applicants paraded down the street, but even more so, if possible, in the second, in which they brought out the elaborate suits with the presenting their candidacy for the crown of the party. Finally, the party chose its first post-pandemic musicians, certifying their return after a difficult stage. However, this extemporaneous return leaves good news: the implementation of a new appointment, open to all, with which the Murcian district wants to add even more followers to its most emblematic festival. Its president, Pablo Belmonte, however, did not let the opportunity pass to recall something of great importance: «Today we are in the Circular; but the Carnival is celebrated in the Cabezo».
