Defense News: Sweden is thinking about its own sixth-generation fighter
Sweden is thinking about creating its own sixth generation fighter. About it writes Defense News publication.
The contract to conduct the corresponding “conceptual studies” was concluded by Saab and the Swedish Ministry of Defense. According to the country’s air force commander, Major General Jonas Wikman, the agreement will be “a journey to figure out the next steps.”
“Conceptual research allows us to have the freedom to decide what works best for us and the freedom to invest in opportunities that make sense to us,” he elaborated.
According to Wickman, a decision on creating a new combat aircraft is unlikely to be made until the beginning of the next decade.

The publication recalls that Sweden has a line of Gripen fighters of its own production, and in 2022 suspended its participation in the joint program of Great Britain, Italy and Japan, which involves the development of a sixth generation fighter by 2035.
In March last year, the publication, citing analyst Justin Bronk, reported that for Ukraine the best fighter that Western countries could supply would be the Swedish Gripen.
