The political weight
The tension over trade agreements on the island after Brexit is further complicated by the political gibberish that makes up the Government of Northern Ireland, made up of the PDU (Protestant) and Sinn Féin (Catholic) coalition. In their day, the Protestant-Unionists campaigned for the hard ‘Brexit’, while the Catholic-Republicans asked to remain in the EU. Although Sinn Féin is linked to ghosts from the past that no one wants to relive – it was considered the political arm of the IRA – its rise has been brilliant in recent years, always accompanied by the demand for a referendum to reunify the island by 2025.
