The work to fine-tune this hydraulic structure had a regional investment of 60,000 euros
The Big Wheel of Abarán is like new again. The General Director of Cultural Heritage, Pablo Braquehais; the mayor, Jesús Gómez, and the councilors of Tourism and Culture, Jaime Tornero and Felipe García, respectively, visited this infrastructure yesterday, whose repair works have already been completed. With a budget of 60,000 euros charged to the Community, the execution has made it possible to fine-tune this wheel, which is the largest diameter in Europe in operation, with almost twelve meters. Also present at the event were the head of the Cultural Heritage service, Gregorio Romero; the architect Juan Carlos Molina and several mayors of the corporation.
The mayor showed his gratitude to the Ministry of Culture and recalled that «the Big Wheel has undergone different actions in recent years. It is the most representative icon in hydraulic matters in Abarán and this has been the definitive remodeling in terms of the buckets to raise the water».
But it was the architect of Cultural Heritage, Juan Carlos Molina, who detailed what the work consisted of. «Fundamentally, the broken shaft has been repaired and the wood and inner buckets have been recovered. The channel has also been cleaned, an action that has been carried out by the City Council ». He insisted that “the most important thing is its maintenance.” The works were carried out by the Restauralia company.
Visit the museum
Prior to the act, the authorities visited the Abarán Museum. The curator María José Gómez and the municipal technician José Raúl Gómez guided those present through the different rooms of this space. There they were able to contemplate the elements and furniture of old trades such as the Amorós tailor shop; the barber shop of the Julio and Fusti Carrasco brothers, the canning companies of Nicolás Gómez and Delfina Carrasco, the carpentry shop of Joaquín Montiel and the Hortel laboratory, founded by Pedro García Carrillo.
The general director of Cultural Heritage, Gregorio Romero, inaugurated the visitors’ book with his dedication and signature, and had a few words of praise for the museum. “Here you can see why Abarán has respect for his traditions and his ancestors. I encourage everyone to come and visit the museum and the Big Wheel,” Romero said.
