The corona incidence in Germany is higher than ever, the intensive care units are at their limit. Virologist Christian Drosten is now making it clear that it is not just a pandemic of the unvaccinated.
Berlin – The number of new corona infections is rising steadily and for the first time in the corona pandemic has reached the high of 50,196 new corona infections. This is evident from the numbers that reflect the status of the RKI dashboard from Thursday morning at 3:40 a.m. The day before, there were “only” 39,676 infections.
Corona numbers explode: Drosten refutes false belief: “We do not have a pandemic of the unvaccinated”
The nationwide seven-day incidence also again reached a high of 249.1. For comparison: a week ago the incidence was 154.5 (previous month: 66.5). In addition, 235 deaths were recorded nationwide yesterday. The situation is also getting worse in the intensive care units. In Munich, Mayor Dieter Reiter expects “a collapse of the emergency medical care system”. The 380 intensive care beds in the city are “full”. A picture that is similar everywhere in Germany.
Since 67.3 percent of Germans are now fully vaccinated, many speak of a pandemic for the unvaccinated, as they end up in hospitals with symptoms. Virologist Christian Drosten now clearly contradicts this. “There is a narrative at the moment that I think is completely wrong: the pandemic of the unvaccinated,” he told the Time referring to statements made by several politicians in Germany. He clarifies: “We do not have a pandemic of the unvaccinated, we have a pandemic. And we have people who are still very much at risk, the older unvaccinated people. We only have a vaccination quota of 86 percent of those over 60 years of age, which is insane, it is really dangerous. “
Drosten: “Protection against the spread of vaccination is decreasing” – virologist calls for vaccination gaps to be closed
Those who are not vaccinated become infected with their age-typical risk profile, explains the virologist. “Many will then end up in the intensive care unit. That overloads intensive care medicine. That is why the acute goal is not to allow too many infections at once. ”Unfortunately, the delta variant would have the property of spreading despite the vaccination.
Drosten shows im Time-Interview pointed out that after two or three months the protection against spreading the vaccination began to decline. According to a study, the vaccinations lose most of their effectiveness after a few months. “And we have a lot of people, especially in the relevant age groups, who were vaccinated in May or June. They are now gradually losing their protection against proliferation, and they are increasing in number. We have a pandemic to which everyone is contributing – including those who have been vaccinated, albeit a little less. “
But how can the situation be resolved? Drosten demands that the vaccination gaps must be closed with all might. He goes on to explain: “From a purely scientific point of view, a nationwide vaccination of the entire adult population would reduce the exposure to intensive care units over the long term. Then every infection would be a breakthrough vaccination, and they are significantly less pathogenic. ”That would then be compared to a severe influenza season.
Drosten: Vaccinated people can pass on coronavirus – booster vaccinations as a solution
Since vaccinated people could pass the virus on, especially because of the more contagious Delta variant, he was convinced that “we have only little benefit from fully vaccinated adults who cannot be boosted.”
That is why a booster campaign must now be carried out with great vigor: “A campaign for third-party vaccinations for everyone who has already been vaccinated, starting with the elderly. This would probably guarantee herd protection at least for the duration of the winter. “
In addition to protecting the elderly, according to Drosten, protection against transmission would probably be regained, “then the incidence will drop rapidly”. However, he also explains: “Mind you, I’m not asking for anything here, and I don’t want to suggest that boosters alone could solve the problem. The time is probably too short for that anyway. ”He therefore reckons with renewed contact restrictions. So a lockdown for the unvaccinated, thanks to 2G. “Whether that will lower the incidence in November – I have my doubts.” (md)
