Al-Zawahiri was born in 1951 in Egypt to an upper-class family from Cairo. His grandfather was the chief imam of the prominent Al Azhar Mosque, and his father was a professor of pharmacology at Cairo University.

In December 1996, al-Zawahiri reportedly spent half a year in prison in Russia after being caught for not having a visa. According to the BBC, he was saved by the fact that the Russians were not allowed to translate the Arabic texts on al-Zawahiri’s computer.

In 1997 al-Zawahiri is believed to have settled in Jalalabad, Afghanistan, where bin Laden also lived.

The following year, Egyptian Islamic Jihad merged with bin Laden’s al-Qaeda and four other extremist Islamist organizations.

The first thing it did was issue a fatwa calling for the killing of US civilians. The first attacks on US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in August 1998 killed 223 people.
