British Prime Minister Liz Truss said on Tuesday she was backing down from her plan to cut income tax for the wealthiest.
Trass said it did not feel it was wrong and pledged to press ahead with its economic reforms.
Despite Truss’ push to move forward, divisions have emerged within the government as the ruling Conservative Party faces a difficult new day at its annual conference in Birmingham.
Truss and Chancellor of the Exchequer Kwasi Quarting have been forced to back off their plan to cut income tax for the wealthiest, at a time when ordinary Britons are grappling with the worst cost-of-living crisis in generations.
The plan was met with widespread criticism from opponents in the conservative party and a deep dissatisfaction reflected in opinion polls.
“I think that there is no shame in the leader listening to the people and responding, and so am I,” the Sky News Terrace reported.
While stressing that tax cuts were a “distraction”, she told the BBC: “Yes, we will have to make difficult decisions.”
“I am determined to go ahead with this growth package,” she told LBC radio, stressing another item in the plan that is to cap high energy bills.
