Television review A particularly successful Swedish tension series is in the footsteps of the lost – The protagonists are united by the experience of being belittled

The central scene in the Dark Heart series is the forest, but its scariest spaces can be found inside the heads of the characters. The series is based on true events.

Swedish Dark heart The main venue of the series is the forest, but it does not pose a twin-paced threat and does not represent the nordic noir fetish for international viewers. The forest is both an industry and a habitat – and a potential place for bodies to decay.

The main character is Sanna (Clara Christiansson Drake) is trained in forestry and has returned home. He is passionate about forest machines, thinning and digital mapping. Sanna’s father, Bengt, a local landowner (Peter Andersson), however, wants to stick to old routines.

The second protagonist of the five-part series, Tanja (Aliette Opheim) will be met two years later. He works for a missing volunteer organization and rakes the area to find Bengt, who disappeared soon after Sanna returns.

Discovery the series is based on real events from the southern Swedish town of Förlösa. The scene has been relocated, names changed and characters added, but there is a crime reporter at the bottom Joakim Palmkvistin nonfiction book.

The book is written from the perspective of a woman who led an organization looking for a missing person. In the series, the perspective varies flexibly between Sanna and Tanja.

Sanna loves, in addition to forestry, the young people on the farm (Gustav Lindh), even though he knows his father does not accept the relationship. Tanja, for her part, puts all the bangs on her volunteer work, even if it means lying to the actual employer. In the third episode, the stories of the main characters already run at the same time level.

Both incubate an ambition for which there is no room. The protagonists are united by the experience of being belittled. The father does not take his daughter seriously, and the authorities do not take the seller of the meat counter that herdsmen seriously.

Dark heart was screened in January as part of the prestigious Sundance Film Festival, the only European series among U.S. indie series. The spectacular premiere is explained by both the authors and the quality.

The series has been created by a screenwriter Oskar Söderlund and director Gustav Möller. The former is known Snabba Cash series, and the latter made an excellent film as his firstborn The Guiltyof which Netflix already saw the US version.

Dark heart looks and sounds exceptionally good. The images are thoughtful, there is room for sound, and the story goes on, even if the mystery is not pledged for a long time.

At the forefront is the anxiety of the everyday setting. Dark heart is a psychological thrill drama whose most frightening spaces are not found in the forest but inside the heads of characters.
