Tekken 8 impressed fans with his recent debut trailer which, despite its brevity, was a promising teaser for what, according to Bandai Namco, it will be a huge technical leap for the franchise. The trailer, made entirely in real time, showed dynamic effects for the battle phases, extremely detailed character models and much more. Recently speaking with IGNthe boss of Tekken Katsuhiro Harada provided more technical details about the game.
Interestingly, Tekken 8 will be made with Unreal Engine 5 (unlike Tekken 7, which used UE4) and will not reuse any of the assets (environments, objects, character models, etc.) of its predecessor. The new Tekken, therefore, was built entirely from scratch. Harada stated that “all Tekken 7 models and materials have been completely discarded“for the sequel.
He then explained that Tekken 7 had some effects similar to those of Tekken 8, but these were scripted parameters in the game rather than actual dynamic effects.
“Tekken 7 had something like this: when the character fell to the ground or during battle, he looked like he was sweating or something“said Harada.”But that was just one parameter of the game when it comes to visualization. This is the first time we have rain and external effects. And not only that, when the characters fall to the ground, their clothes will get dirty as a result. Thus it will be possible to see the results of the battle on the models of the fighters“.
Tekken 8 is in development for PS5, Xbox Series X / S and PC. A release date has not yet been announced.
