A Precision Air aircraft crashed into Lake Victoria, in Tanzania, with 53 people on board including 49 passengers, just before landing at Bukoba International Airport. He had departed from the Tanzanian commercial capital of Dar es Salam.
The toll of the accident continues to worsen. In fact, the number of deceased people has risen to 19. Immediately after the accident, 26 injured were taken to hospital.
The two pilots survived the crash and spoke to officials from the cockpit, but according to the premier’s statement they may have subsequently died. Rescuers and fishermen have been busy since the first moments of the accident to rescue the occupants of the plane who were trapped. After crashing, in fact, the plane was almost completely submerged in the lake.
The plane was flying from Dar es Salaam to Bukoba via Mwanza. President Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her condolences to those affected by the incident and asked them to remain calm while the rescue operations continue. Precision Air is Tanzania’s largest private airline and is partly owned by Kenya Airways. It was founded in 1993 and operates national and regional flights.
