“These are emergency medical supplies that will contribute to providing emergency support to people affected by the earthquake,” Gebreissos told reporters at the airport.
The UN official confirmed that the World Health Organization will continue to provide support “by bringing more emergency supplies,” noting that today’s shipment is “the first, and it will be followed by another shipment tomorrow, loaded with more than thirty tons.”
He stressed that the organization intends to “provide emergency supplies, especially those important for the management of trauma for people affected by the earthquake.”
According to SANA, Gebreissos intends to tour, with the Syrian Minister of Health, Hassan Ghobash, and the Governor of Aleppo, some hospitals and shelters in the city, which were severely damaged by the earthquake.
“Dr. Tedros’ visit is of great importance from many aspects, as he will first see the reality and what caused this disaster,” said Ghobash, who was receiving the organization’s director, to reporters.
“We wish Dr. Tedros to see the reality of hospitals and what they lack in terms of equipment,” he added, counting on the organization’s ability to “provide us with them to provide the required health services.”
The death toll from the earthquake in Turkey and Syria, on Friday, rose to more than 24,000 dead and about 80,000 wounded.
