Thorn was a tiny state in the German Reich at the time, in which aristocratic women were in charge – very special for the time. The exhibition tells the life story of the princesses Polyxena, Gabriella and Cunegonda. ,,Only unmarried women of high nobility could take up residence in the Thornse stift. These princesses, spiders in the web of the European nobility, were at home at renowned courts such as those of Vienna and Versailles,” the Limburgs Museum reports in a press release. “They also received guests themselves: it was an honor to be invited to Thorn.”
The museum wants to make the battle between the outward display of the noble ladies and their personal emotional life tangible with paintings, letters, art objects, robes and accessories. The exhibition can be seen until 3 April 2022 in the Limburgs Museum in Venlo.
