To Tampere deputy councilor of the city council Arttu Rintanen would like a quiet, adult-oriented beach in the city.
Rintanen presented the idea on Sunday on the messaging service Twitter. In a tweet, he stated that he wished for a “child-free” beach.
“Basically, noise and rioting are disturbing, and now they mainly come from children”, Rintanen explains his thoughts in the Twitter thread.
On the phone, Rintanen tells HS that the proposal is not about provocation.
“I’m serious,” he says.
According to his own experiences, children are the worst source of noise at the beach.
“Furthermore, there is noise coming from traveling groups and especially in the evening from groups of people. According to the feedback I received, these are the top 3 noise sources.”
to the Twitter thread hundreds of responses came in less than a day, and Rintanen is not alone in his thoughts. Among other things, the mayor of Ylitornio Maija Pihlajamäki says in the Twitter thread that in addition to children screaming on the beach, he is disturbed by “the throwing of sand around and the throwing of a ball where it hurts at others”. In addition, he criticized the fact that on the beach you run over strangers’ beach towels or things, or that sand flies over others.
Pihlajamäki did not want to reveal his opinion in more detail to HS.
Dream silence was born in Rintanen’s mind at the Alajärvi beach. He has also swum there in the summer as a child.
“I went there on Sunday to swim after a long break. There was quite a commotion and noise there.”
For a quiet experiment, Rintanen suggests a beach in Pyyniki, as there are two beaches in the area: the Rosendahl side and the beach on the Jalkasaari side. The quiet side could be, for example, the latter. On that side, Rintanen himself often goes swimming.
“You could put a sign there that would say, for example, ‘this beach is quiet, keep your voice down and don’t make a fuss,'” he says.
On the beach, you could read a book or sunbathe in peace without “children running around or someone playing music at full blast”, Rintanen describes.
“At our house [Tampereen kaupungilla] there are 32 public beaches, so declaring one beach quiet would not be a big problem. After all, you could bring the children there too, if they know how to be quiet and peaceful.”

Commissioner for Children’s Affairs Elina Pekkarinen writes in a Twitter thread that a beach forbidden to children would be against the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and Article 6 of the Constitution.
According to Pekkarinen, the proposal embodies an “unfortunately general child-hating atmosphere in society”.
“The child has the right to express himself, to be seen and heard. It would be unreasonable to require silence in places that were created for leisure and recreation (to which children also have the right),” writes Pekkarinen.
According to Rintanen, the reaction is exaggerated.
“After all, we have pool shifts only for women and a huge number of city-oriented services that are not intended for all groups of people.”
Chestnut however, says that he knew how to expect different opinions.
“I could expect that people with children of their own would be really defensive about this. In my own bubble of childless young adults in their 20s and 30s, the feedback has been nothing but positive. They have said they would pay to get into one [hiljaiselle] to the beach.”
Rintanen points out that the city should also voluntarily respond to the increase in the number of childless people and thus also the demand for “child-free” areas.
Are you perhaps voluntarily childless?
“At the moment I am childless, and there are no hopes of having children,” says Rintanen.
However, he does not believe that this is the explanation for the longing for a quiet beach.
“It’s probably quite universal that when people want to relax, they like a peaceful atmosphere.”
Rintanen himself is not pushing forward with his proposal.
“But it’s good that there was a discussion about this. Maybe here we will get from talk to action, if it seems that this would be legally possible and people hope for this.”
