Kyrie with 38 points drags Brooklyn to an important victory at the home of the champions. “When we are all healthy we will be fine”
The message Brooklyn sends to the NBA comes loud and clear: the Nets aren’t done for yet. The messenger is perhaps the most controversial of Steve Nash’s stars: Kyrie Irving. At home in Milwaukee, in one of the 8 seasonal games he has left to play (unless New York City cancels the vaccination requirement as new Mayor Adams is planning to do), the part-time star churns out 38 points, dragging his to a very important 126-123. He is to blame for the too many mistakes of the champions, in the fourth defeat in the last 5 games, but also an important signal that for Brooklyn the situation can still be rectified. “It has certainly not been the ideal season so far, but I’m sure that when we have the whole team we will be fine,” he says at the end of the game, with Kevin Durant and Ben Simmons waiting for him in plainclothes for congratulations.
NETS SIGNALS
–
Brooklyn (won 32 – lost 29 to date) has just won their third win in their last 16 games. But it is an important victory, both for the opponent and for the world in which the Nets have played: battling against a team that has so far proved to be stronger, showing that the insertions of Andre Drummond (excellent with 17 points, 12 rebounds and 5 assists) and Seth Curry (important with 19 points) are already on the spot, waiting to find out what Simmons is worth (the Australian’s debut is on standby for a back problem). “We held out and did all the little things it took to win,” says Irving after his first game in two weeks. Nash’s team needed a game so to convince themselves that everything can still go well, that the storm following Durant’s injury (expected return within the next week) has become even worse with the controversy that led to the departure of James Harden is surmountable. Brooklyn is convinced that it is a title team even with the new set-up: victories like this one in Milwaukee prove that it could be true.
HOW MANY ERRORS
–
Milwaukee (36-25) can only blame herself for the defeat with which she inaugurates the “post All Star Game” part of her season. The 15 turnovers that the Nets have turned into 27 points are the most striking figure, but what Coach Bud has to mull over is the inability to close the game: the Bucks had Brooklyn on the ropes, up 7 with 7 ‘to play , yet they allowed opponents to get out of the corner and place the knockout blow. The best was Bobby Portis, 30 points and 8 triples to target. Giannis finished with 29 points, 14 rebounds and 6 assists but missed the three-point shot in extra time; Khris Middleton (25 points and 7 assists) and Jrue Holiday (19 and 7) played well without enchanting. On the other hand, the bench was bad: it produced just 13 points (8 from Ibaka and 5 from Matthews), less than half of that of Brooklyn. The Bucks also need reserves to aim for an encore.
THE MATCH
–
Milwaukee tries the immediate draw (32-25 after a quarter), but Kyrie immediately lights up and keeps the Nets glued (59-53 at rest). When Curry also lights up (12 points in the third period), Brooklyn turns and runs away at 87-74 at 5 ‘from the third siren, where the Bucks, however, arrive with only 3 points of disadvantage on the wave of a 15-5 run. . Portis hits hard again at the start of the fourth period and Milwaukee tries a good escape, but Irving keeps the Nets in the game and when the last minute begins, the guests have the advantage (118-116). The end is a nervous game of fouls from which Milwaukee fails to get out: under 3, with 2 ”on the clock, Giannis takes the triple of despair but the iron says no. And he gives Brooklyn a win on which to try to rebuild something big.
Milwaukee: Portis 30 (3/4 of two, 8/14 of three, 0/2 free throws), G. Antetokounmpo 29, Middleton 25. Rebounds: G. Antetokounmpo 14. Assist: Holiday 7, Middleton 7.
Brooklyn: Irving 38 (12/20, 2/6, 8/9 tl), Curry 19, Drummond 17. Rebounds: Drummond 12. Assists: Irving 5, Drummond 5.
