Dre has become extremely successful as a rapper and businessman, but the foundation of his massive impact on popular culture lies behind the buttons: as producer, mentor and/or label owner of some of the most high profile successes in the history of rap music – from gangsta rap pacesetters NWA to the record-breaking sales debut of Snoop Dogg, from Eminem and 50 Cent to Kendrick Lamar.
Those last four superstars joined Dr. Dre on a historic night Sunday night. Never before has the musical interpretation of the prestigious halftime show of the Super Bowl (final of the American football competition) been completely dominated by rap and hip hop. At SoFi Stadium, near the town of Compton where Dr. Dre and Kendrick Lamar, the rappers celebrated hip-hop history, street culture and the city/region where Dr. Dre first made a name for themselves in the 1980s.
California hip-hop culture
In countless details, California’s local hip-hop culture took center stage, partly through Dr. Dre became a globally successful and influential phenomenon. From the Chevrolets on stage, to the outfits of the dancers. From a set with iconic Compton landmarks, to choreography elements such as hip-hop dance krumping and the Crip Walk – a dance step traditionally used by members of the Crips gang to spell the letters CRIP with quick footwork.
With Snoop Dogg, Eminem, 50 Cent and Kendrick Lamar, the organization of the Super Bowl largely chose stars who have already passed the peak of their careers. A highlight of the show was Mary J. Blige, the only female performing, with her intense rendition of classic ‘No More Drama’. Eminem did the Oscar-winning “Lose Yourself” with the more recent Dr. Dre protégé Anderson .Paak enjoying his drums. Eminem ended up on one knee – referring to the uniform protest against anti-black police brutality by football player Colin Kaepernick, who was subsequently unable to play for any team in the National Football League.
Surrounded by powerful group choreography, Pulitzer Prize winner Kendrick Lamar performed ‘Alright’ of his masterpiece To Pimp A Butterfly† 50 Cent hung upside down and struggled gasping for breath at the end of hit song ‘In Da Club’. Snoop Dogg performed wearing the infamous Death Row Records logo, co-created by Dr. Dre founded the record label on which Snoop Dogg broke through in the early 1990s and where the solo debut of Dr. Dre and the last records of Tupac ‘2Pac’ Shakur, who was murdered in 1996.
Snoop recently announced that he has become the owner of the label, and also released his album there last Friday BODR (Bacc On Death Row) on out. Mary J. Blige also released a new album just before the Super Bowl, Good Morning Gorgeous† from dr. Dre appeared on streaming services several new tracks he made for the game in the run-up to the final Grand Theft Auto Online†
