Yesterday, the Terror Court in Khartoum issued a verdict acquitting 9 of the leaders of the ousted Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir’s rule, most notably Major General Maaash Anas Omar, head of the dissolved National Congress Party in Khartoum State, and 8 others, after two years of imprisonment on charges of plotting a coup attempt against the transitional government headed by the Prime Minister. Former Abdullah Hamdouk, and the attempt to undermine the constitutional system.
The indictment charged the defendants with charges that carry the death penalty under the articles of the Criminal Code and the Anti-Terrorism Law. The court acquitted the defendants on the grounds that the accusation was based on the statements of the accusation witness who denied the merits of his statements.
The judge said that the case did not amount to convicting the defendants after the indictment failed to provide incriminating statements, so the court decided to acquit them and release them immediately.
Supporters of the former regime celebrated the innocence of its leaders, and carried the defense lawyer, Abdel Baset Sabdarat, jubilant for their release, amid cheers and exclamations.
On the other hand, the official spokesman of the Sudanese Armed Forces, Colonel Nabil Abdullah, warned against transmitting news about the armed forces without referring to his office. Military operations carried out by the armed forces, and then attributed to military sources.”
The statement stressed that if any party publishes similar content without referring to his office, it will have to bear full responsibility for the publication.
