In February, the PRF rescued 206 workers in situations similar to slavery in Bento Gonçalves (RS)
The Minister of Labor and Employment, Luiz Marinho (PT), said that if the unions had closely monitored the situation of workers at the wineries in Bento Gonçalves (RS), they would not have been subjected to conditions analogous to slavery. The declaration was made during a luncheon promoted by the Entrepreneurship Parliamentary Front this Wednesday (7.Mar.2023).
The PRF (Federal Highway Police) found 206 workers in a situation similar to slavery in the Serra Gaúcha region on February 22. According to the corporation, they “they were caught in degrading conditions”.
“If in the wineries of the South there were contracts being monitored by the unions, there would not be this catastrophe that happened. Often the parent employer is not aware of the outsourced link, but if the unions had acted, this certainly would not have happened. We have to look at trade union activity as an essential activity to guarantee the maturity of relations”he said.
The labor was provided by a third-party company. Services were provided to Aurora, Cooperativa Garibaldi and Salton wineries. After the backlash from the case, Aurora and Salton wineries published open letters apologizing to the rescued workers.
The minister is linked to the trade union movement of metallurgists in the ABC region of São Paulo. When he took office, in January, the politician said that he would reinstate Conaete (National Coordination for the Eradication of Slave Labor and Combating Human Trafficking), Conatrae (National Commission for the Eradication of Slave Labor) and Conatrap (National Committee to Combat Trafficking in Persons).
