Former US President Donald Trump was heavily criticized this Saturday (26) by the White House and part of his own Republican Party for having dinner this week with rapper Kanye West and a white supremacist.
West, who goes by the name Ye, has been at the center of a series of controversies, including posting statements denounced as anti-Semitic on his social media.
Aspiring Republican candidate in the 2024 presidential election, Trump confirmed that he attended a dinner with the fashion and rap star at Mar-a-Lago, his residence in Florida, which soon aroused strong criticism from the country’s political leaders. .
“Biggery, hatred and anti-Semitism have no place in the United States, not even in Mar-a-Lago,” said White House spokesman Andrew Bates.
Also at the dinner was Nick Fuentes, a 24-year-old known for spreading white supremacist ideas with his podcasts.
According to the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), Fuentes is also a Jewish Holocaust denier in World War II.
“You don’t want to know what I think about it,” said President Joe Biden, in turn, when asked.
Protests also broke out inside the Trump camp.
“Any meeting, even out of courtesy, with an anti-Semite like Kanye West and a scum like Nick Fuentes is unacceptable,” said David Friedman, US ambassador to Israel during the Republican tycoon’s presidency.
“I want to tell my friend Donald Trump that he is better than this,” the diplomat tweeted.
The former tenant of the White House defended himself on his social networks, assuring that the meal was “quick” and “without incident”. He indicated that he got along “very well” with Kanye West, who had not made “any anti-Semitic comments”.
