Iberia Express, the low-cost subsidiary of the Iberia airline, canceled eight domestic flights on Sunday, after the call for a 10-day strike by crew members, who are demanding a salary increase due to inflation.
The movement started today and should lead to “92 cancellations in total, with more than 17,000 Iberia Express passengers affected”, according to sources from the USO union, which called for the mobilization.
The strike at the low-cost carrier coincides with strikes at competing airlines such as EasyJet and Ryanair. Eight flights were canceled on Sunday, according to a union statement, which reported 1,500 passengers affected.
Iberia Express confirmed the cancellations and said it had provided alternative transport for 84% of affected passengers, with the rest opting for a refund or voucher. On the other hand, 12 EasyJet flights were canceled this Sunday, the third day of the company’s pilots’ strike, according to the Sepla union.
Since the beginning of the strikes, on the 12th, 87 flights have been cancelled. The pilots demand that the working conditions they had before the pandemic be restored, and that negotiations for a collective agreement be resumed.
In Portugal, important airports were affected by a strike called by the workers of the Portway company responsible for handling the luggage. This Sunday, the third and final day of mobilization, 69 flights were canceled at Lisbon and Porto airports, according to Portway. In the three days of the strike, 196 flights were canceled, according to the company.
